Eight of the main life skills, Clients of The Empowerment House Sober Living houses shall learn and practice during their stay.


Self-Care/Wellness


A high-quality transitional housing program shall help clients recognize the importance of self-care as well as what it looks like daily. Clients shall learn and practice the basics of self-care/wellness within the boundaries of their sober living program. This includes getting adequate sleep, exercising, eating nutritious foods, engaging in holistic education. Implementing coping strategies to combat depression,  anxiety,             negative emotions, and    irrational thoughts.


Cooking Meals


A high-quality transitional housing program will help clients learn how to create a meal plan, shop for groceries, and prepare their own meals.

The Empowerment House shall require that clients purchase their own groceries and prepare their own meals, which gives them time to practice this skill and develop a system that works best for them.

  

Setting and Achieving   personal goals


A high-quality transitional housing program will help clients make goals. Years of continued substance abuse may have left some people feeling hopeless, without any life goals or

aspirations. Goals keep life moving forward and prevent old habits from seeping back in. Some examples of positive goals might be:

· Opening a savings account. 

· Volunteering for a community organization.

· Submitting three job applications each week    until employment is secured.


Maintaining a

clean-living space


A high-quality transitional housing program will help clients learn how to maintain a clean-living space . Which will make returning home a whole lot easier, especially for those who have family members.

Living with other individual's in a sober living home can present its own challenges and obstacles. Clients will learn the importance of respecting others and

considering other's wants and needs when making decisions.


Managing Finances


A high-quality transitional housing program will help clients recognize the importance of managing finances. Empowerment House shall require that clients purchase their own personal products, food, and purchase anything else they need that is not already provided. The time spent in Empowerment House will give clients the opportunity to practice budgeting, saving, and planning for life expenses.


Building Healthy Relationships


A high-quality transitional housing program will help clients adjust to their new life of sobriety. By assisting them to understand that  their family and friends will also be adjusting to the change. Thus, regardless of how family and friends respond to an individual’s newfound sobriety. It is vital that people in recovery focus on the following things:

· Communicating clearly

· Expressing emotions 

· Listening

· Identifying and coping with    triggers in social situations.


Managing Time


A high-quality transitional housing program will help clients understand that one of the best ways to practice time management while in a sober living program is to invest in a daily planner. Clients utilizing a planner to schedule out free time is a great way to avoid boredom and wasted time, which put a person at higher risk for relapse. Clients will also be assisted in developing a relapse prevention plan.                    


Finding and Maintaining Employment


A high-quality transitional housing program will help clients find and obtain employment. The support will also help clients learn how to search for employment using various methods, such as filling out applications, creating or updating a resume, surfing the web, and how to properly present themselves in a job interview.
